Extreme battery drain in iPhone post update

Hello after 17.5.1 update i encounter extreme battery drain and life drop from 90% to 86% after update. Battery drains almost 50-60% in 4 hours without using it before update battery lasts almost day and half without charging!

For everyone having battery issues immediately after an update (within 1-2 days) here is a guide.

*** FYI, I shamelessly copy/pasted from articles Apple has on this site for your ease of use. I didn’t copy/paste when animations on the link will be helpful.***

First, understand that the software does housekeeping after an update. It can usually be accomplished overnight but that depends on your device and its data. Try to install updates overnight and leave the device on the charger (It’s ok to do so and won’t ruin the battery. That rule applied to older battery technology). This is so that processor intensive tasks like file indexing for Spotlight Search or iCloud syncing can occur then and not during your day.

If still dealing with drain after two days it’s probably something else so we need to become detectives and use the Settings > Battery section to see which apps are the culprits. Check under the View Battery Usage Information

section here: Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple (bookmark that link for later)

If nothing stood out on the battery usage, next check all apps for updates in the app store. To do this:

  1. Open the App Store app  on your iPhone.
  2. Tap  or your picture at the top right.
  3. Scroll down, then tap Update next to apps you want to update, or tap Update All.

Install them all. Feel free to do some spring cleaning on apps you no longer need also. Here is how:

Do any of the following:

  • Remove an app from the Home Screen:Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then tap Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library, or tap Delete App to delete it from iPhone.

  • Delete an app from App Library and Home Screen: Touch and hold the app in App Library, tap Delete App, then tap Delete.

Next, if any apps in the Battery Usage showed background activity, look at Background App Refresh (Settings>General>Background App Refresh) and turn off any apps that should not be allowed to be active when you aren’t using them.

Basically, if you lock your screen or move to another app, do you still want that other app running in the background?

Map apps, fitness apps and music apps like Lyft, Waze, Strava, Spotify, etc are examples of ones that you may want to keep on. They need to keep working even while the screen is off. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram etc are ones you may not want on unless it’s important you are notified of everything as it happens even if you aren’t in the app.

Now that everything is up to date and you’ve eliminated any frivolous battery usage, use the phone and see if that helped.

If not, next try closing all applications (helpful animations on this link):

(Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support ) and restarting the device: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

If this still didn’t help, try a force restart (helpful animations on this link. The title is for a different scenario but it is the correct link): If your iPhone won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support

After all of this charge back up to 100% and give it a go. If still having trouble then give Apple or your family tech support (your kids, niece or nephew ;) ) a call.

I hope this helps. But to reiterate it is normal for the battery to suffer immediately after an update. All that housekeeping that gets done plus your regular usage taxes the battery hard those first days. I always leave my phone on the charger overnight after an update and it rarely ever gives me trouble. I have had the iPhone 4, 6S, XR and currently 13 Pro and used similar principles across all of them, except where the iOS features differed. Never got rid of a phone for battery issues but I did replace the battery on my 6S when it reached the end of its useful life around 70% Battery Health.

Cheers all.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution! Please look in the right direction.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

It is definitely the update for my phone.I have an iPhone SE 2nd GEN and keep my phone on what I refer to as lockdown. I have no running apps refreshing in the background, I do not have my email turned on so when I need to check it I turned it on go and check all my emails and turn the Mac off, I don't leave any browser windows open when I'm done with a browser I close it completely, etc. The only difference before the update and after the update is the update. I see the battery draining before my eyes. I understand when updates are done be it an app or an ios update, it continues to work so for a little while the battery drains more often however, I have never seen this happen on my phone or any iPhone I have ever owned. I even turn off my phone at night as I do not need to leave it on. My iPhones last forever in excellent working condition. I have no doubt that it is this update that has affected my phone. I'll see how it goes the next couple of days otherwise, I will wipe it and do a back up upload prior to this update for the fist time ever. If someone at Apple is listening which I sometimes doubt, perhaps they might want to look into this matter. All the best, D PS stop pushing apps and face gallery etc. on my Apple watch too. Consumers don't like having things forced upon them and everybody has their breaking point. As much as I dislike android phones when I walk away from Apple after a lifetime of loyalty,I will never walk back. Cheers to all!

We use one Apple SE 3rd Gen and one 14 Plus. Both phones were backed up before initiating the update to 17.5.1. The Apps are all updated, those that are not used are turned off - no background refresh, cellular data turned off etc. We haven't changed any settings on the phones.

Unless I overlooked it, I haven't seen anyone from Apple posting recommendations!

If that many users are complaining about rapid battery drainage after updating to IOS17.5.1, wouldn't it be fair enough to assume the root cause for the rapid battery drainage is an Apple issue?!

Same here. At 8:21 AM my phone had 100% charge. Cut to 7 hours and 18 minutes later with MY NORMAL usage and I’m down to 15%. My battery life is normal with 193 cycle counts and first use only in 11/2023.

Since nothing else has changed with regard to my iPhone (usage, damage, additional apps or external devices ), I can only conclude that the upgrade to iOS 17.5.1 has caused extensive drain issues on my battery.

Apple fix this immediately!!

Since iOS 17.5.1 update, my iPhone 15 pro battery is draining at 4-5% per hour rate in Standby mode (Overall standby time for fully charged phone is < 24 hours). It doesn't matter even if i turn off all background refreshing and turn On power saving mode. I hope Apple will look into this in time. It is very very frustating to spend over 1500 Euros on a phone with < 24hour standby battery. Before this update my device was draining battery around 1-1.5% per hour in standby. My current battery health is 100% (135 cycles), but it seems this update will greatly damage the battery. I wish we could have an option to swtch back to previous stable iOS versions.

To test the ios17.5.1 explicitly, I reset my phone, signed in with new apple id and used it as a new phone without any third party app or additional settings. The phone kept draining at 4-5% per hour rate.. This confirmed either the iOS version is having problem (as phone worked fine with iOS 17.5) or my phone's hardware got some issue. FYI battery health is showing 100%.

Exactly. Most of us just need a phone to communicate in two ways: text messages and voice calls. We don't need background app refreshing or Journaling suggestions, or any other crap that uses more battery. I purposely keep my phone on 17.3.1 just for this reason, learned my lesson the hard way with 17.4. Moral of the story: turn off automatic updates and read reviews before updating.

I experience the exact same development.

My max battery capacity dropped a few percent with the update and it drains insanely fast now. Funnily enough I just started using my phone less than ever before (basically only listening to music for like 1hr every other day) and the battery still drains faster than before.

I don't know why people answer you to claim it's not because of the update or to even claim that the update had the opposite effects on their devices. Those answers are condescending and not helping with the problem.

On top of all that I also stopped receiving any notifications ever since the update. No settings are changed.

I feel like there has to be something seriously wrong with the update.

I’ve been having the same issues. I remember a couple of years back people would be excited for a new update. Nowadays we are mostly worried about the battery life/drainage.

Ive been using an iPhone 12 for the past 2 years, shouldn’t be considered an old device. It came with iOS 15 which was amazing battery wise, I saw it suffer as soon as I updated to 16 and after 17 the battery drain plummeted.

Apple itself stated that tests ios versions so it runs pristinely on compatible models. So I don’t think it’s an age issue, the A14 Bionic is a capable chip. Phones aren’t supposed to be that disposable.

I’ve always chosen iPhone for its longevity. The battery is smaller but in my use, used to degrade slower than the larger ones found in some android phones.

Unfortunately that’s no longer the case. I dont want to be forced into buying a new device. I rather make the switch for an android than accept the poor software optimization (at least on android they compensate this with large batteries).

I believe I’m not alone on this one.
