10.7.5 Quick Fix Back to 10.7.4

OK so you've updated to 10.7.5 and Time Machine is now slow and spotlight is forever running.


Well I just couldn't be bothered with waiting for Apple to sort this out.


The simple solution for me was to restore the whole system from Time Machine.


Here's how.


Make sure you copy all the stuff that you haven't backed up manually to a spare drive.


This fix will restore everything including 10.7.4 and wipe out all unbacked up data.


Hold command R down and reboot with your time machine drive connected.


You'll then have a few options to restore, so select time machine, find the file in the list thatis prior to 10.7.5 (it shows this in the listing)


Hit restore and depending on how much data, there will be an estimated time displayed. In my case about 45 minutes.


Spotlight is now fine and re-indexing within Minutes


Time Machine is back to normal and does not Hang.


I hope this is of help to someone if you're in a fix and as frustrated as I was.


Problem now solved till Apple do a better update.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5), 3.4Ghz (16GB Ram) Intel Core i7

You are not clearly stating your problems. As the tens of millions that have downloaded and installed the update and have not come here with an issue, then you are in the tiny minority that are having issues yet make it sound that your issues are Universal. If you state your specific problems then we may be able to pinpoint where your system has made a wrong turn. This is 99% user error, through third party programs or faulty updates, despite what you wish to believe. So please troubleshoot and describe your problems exactly before trying to take it out on people here trying to help.

So whats the problem with 10.7.5? Haven't seen anything that is causing any problems on my Macs nor any that I service?


Pete this is the second and third denial of any problem with 10.7.5 that you have made in the last couple of days, which bears no resemblance to the situation described by the many, many posts, the views of typically 40,000 plus of the posts, the press articles, the online articles from CNET, osxdaily etc.


Please don't make smug comments and call the rest of us fools just because you have thousands of points to your name. You are wrong.


You had no problems? good for you. Thousands have. Accept it.

What 47% ? Please back up all these stupid claims with links to your 'figures' or else give us a break. John, by your senior standing one would think you would be used to seeing all these claims in every OSX release and update in history! Time to start doing some serious troubleshooting. As for the bloke posting inbetween, well he makes no sense nor again will provide any links other than troubleshooting forums! That is all you will find in troubleshooting forums!!!

If there's nothing to it, just user error, you better tell Apple since they just released a 10.7.5 supplemental update to resolve "an issue that may cause Time Machine backups to take a very long time to complete."

Pete, you only embarrass yourself by ignoring the thousands of detailed reports regarding this obvious flaw, which I attempted to help you appreciate by consolidating a number of them for your review. Ignore such hints at your peril. Time-consuming experimentation from many users resulted in welcome and helpful workarounds, most notably the OP of this thread (thanks again badga, well done sir).


Responses such as yours screaming with numerous exclamation points only draws attention to your own ignorance. If you intend to be helpful, then be helpful. Listening to users' problems is a prerequisite. Gratuitously claiming such problems do not exist because you have not experienced them is not helpful.

Yes, I have seen similar bugs introduced in OS X updates over the years. It is not often, but it happens and this one is hardly the worst of them. User error is common and easily fixed, but an issue this widespread was obviously beyond our control.


In each of these instances, Apple fixed their errors. I trust this one does as well.

John thanks for pointing out the main reason I started this thread. I'm sorry 😢 to see that it has caused some ruffled feathers for some but hopefully it has helped 🙂 many people who have been struggling with their TM & Spotlight issues. If Pete has had no issues then that's great. This is a community where we all want to help each other and resolve issues ASAP 🙂 and I've had far better help on here at times than from Apple support so well done to you all 😉.

Like I said Pete, we are all very 🙂 for you that you have had no issues (and I'm not being sarcastic here). However this thread is not just about you which is why it is not titled Tips for petermac87 who has no issues with 10.7.5 on his 5 Macs. Why bother commenting on a thread if you just want to undermine the original purpose of that to help others with this update issue. Many community members have had very serious problems and have been quite rightly concerned about loss of important data as well as down time for professionals in their businesses. All you needed to do was check to see that there has been an issue and Apple have now hopefully resolved it. I was originally told by Apple Support that it was an HD issue and it may need replacing which thankfully I did not agree with. Thus my simple solution to those who wanted to go back to 10.7.4 was posted after I had tested it.
