iPhone 12 Pro Max Speakerphone cuts on out calls

Hi all,

Recently returned to Apple after a few years with Android and have gone for the 12 Pro Max (grey 256Gb).

When making any video calls (on any app, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Google Meet) or using the speaker for calls using the phone app, the person I'm speaking to has trouble hearing me as my voice keeps cutting out for them. It seems to happen most when I am speaking and they either make a noise or speak.

I've been through the Apple support app and they indicated that quite a few people have reported this.

Apparently a software issue. I've tested all speakers and mics by recording using voice memos and video (front and rear camera).

My wife and mother in law have the exact same model phone as me and the same iOS version. I don't understand how it can be a software issue when they are running the same setup.

Has anyone else had this issue and more importantly, has it been resolved?

At the end of my tether here. Video calls are vital to my work and it looks really unprofessional.

Try going to settings >> accessibility >> audio/visual >> phone noise cancellation. Select this off. We did this on iPhone 12 with iOS 14.3 and it fixed the problem.

I have the same issue with the iPhone 12. My husband has the issue with is iPhone 12 Pro Max. It started on both our phones about 4 days ago. I can temporarily get away with texting only. Husband uses his for business all day long (works from home) and it’s very annoying. Verizon says they will be sending a new phone for him since he’s already tried the Full Factory Reset and it didn’t make any difference.

I’ve tried resetting Network settings, readjusting Simcard. Neither worked.

Trying the ‘turn off noise cancellation” now to see if that works.

Its not a Verizon issue. It’s an iPhone 12 issue. Three kids have iPhone 11 on Verizon and none have this issue.

I would suggest you go to a Genius Bar and ask for a replacement if they cannot fix on the spot. I was trying to fix up my iPhone 12 Pro by waiting for software update , swapping SIM and many other efforts. But one day, the iphone dropped on the floor when I was trying to swap the SIM to a backup phone after it was cutting off many time. I was very upset and took the iphone to the Genius Bar. The Service staff said they cannot fix the connection issues, so they will replace the phone under the warranty. That sounds alright to me. BUT, they asked me pay AUD 799+GST, because there's damage on the back cover. I was shocked. I paid 1699 AUD for the phone which cannot make stable phone call. Now, I need to pay almost half of the phone price to replace it since they can't fix the problem with the manufacture faulty. If the Apple cannot provide the best quality product, they need to provide the best service to us to value their premium price. We need to stand out and talk to the Apple. Otherwise, more iPhone users would be very frustrated like you and me.

Make sure nothing is blocking the bottom of your phone.

ITS USING THE WRONG MICROPHONE!!

There are 3 microphones, bottom for regular calls, front near camera for videos and by the speaker near your ear on regular call. For speakerphone it should use this 3rd microphone (near ear) but it doesn’t. Apple support said it should use that mic and told me to take to “genius” desk at Apple store. I have 3 12 pros all with same issue. Apple needs to fix the software!! Please repost until Apple sees, hears, tests and fixes.

Please go to www.apple.com/feedback and let Apple know, they actually will read bug fix section:

When using speakerphone it should use this 3rd microphone

(near ear) but it doesn’t. Apple support said it should use that mic and told

me to take to “genius” bar. Genius bar said I should call support. I have 4 12

pros all with same issue. If the iPhone is in a cradle that covers the bottom

mic, people can't hear all or many of the words. Solution: turn her phone over

but then no GPS etc. I have done extensive testing. The mic at the top DOES

function for example taking a video. At the apple store, they tried to tell me problem

due to noise canceling that turns off the top mic when bottom one is covered

but not true.  FYI My 6S+ works correctly. See: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252192115?answerId=254805459022#254805459022

You can tell that all mics work by taking a video and covering the one on the front (by cameras) and the back. They try covering each independently. So, we know the mics work, just not on a speakerphone call. If you put the phone in a cradle (or hand) on speaker and there is anything near the mic on the bottom of the phone, it starts breaking up due to noise canceling and obstructions.

My wife and I are adding our complaint hoping Apple is looking at this and taking it seriously. We purchased (2) 12 Pro Max's in Jan, 2021 from an indirect Verizon store in Macomb Illinois and both machines have had a microphone issue on the receiver's end when our phones are on speaker or face time. We've spoken with Verizon and Apple representatives and their supervisors multiples times. We've reset the Verizon network software and the Apple hardware and software settings many times to no avail. We have replaced my wife's phone with a new 12 Pro Max and both our 5G sim cards, all provided directly from Verizon to no avail. The original issue with choppy communication on the receiver's end is still happening. We've read through many internet posts discussing similar instances of the microphone issue when it adversely impacts the receiver's phone and all the reply suggestions such as "take the Otter box off", "turn the noise reduction off", and "turn the 5G off" do not work. Presently, we are working on a 2nd replacement on my wife's 12 Pro Max to be provided by Verizon. If this solves the problem I will proceed with replacing my 12 Pro Max.

I had the speaker cut out chronically in calls in the mini, and replaced it. Then replaced with the larger 12 model. Same issue. Seems it does not matter what settings are switched off. I’ve had doctors, hospital calls cut out, people hang up. It seems to vary from cracking type noises, muffled, or silence is how the listener describes it. It is not 4g versus 5G or the provider, or where you call from. Can vary randomly, like 50 minutes before cutting out, or repeatedly during a short phone call. I’m waiting for the next software upgrade before reopening my case number. All I can do is ask each caller to be patient with the fault.

My new iPhone 12 Pro has had issues since I purchased it. It is quirky, opens apps on its own and the volume-when streaming etc-the volume gets louder or softer on its own. But the worst of all is the cutting out. I use speakerphone ALL the time personally and for my profession. I have had so many people complain about me cutting out. It is ridiculous. It happens in any room of my house, the car and my work. I’ve tried to make adjustments to settings, etc and NOTHING fixes the issue. I have had several iPhones upgrading every two years and liked the phones. But this phone has had more problems and caused more frustration than any other phone I’ve owned. It is disappointing that you pay $1,000 for a phone that has so many issues. Hoping for an update to solve these issues but it seems to be slow in coming.

I am having the same issue with my brand new iphone. I am using the same sim card/ carrier as i was using before. I am being told my voice cuts off on both wifi and regular calls. Apple did not find any issue when they run the diagnosis but i have asked them to replace the phone. The new one also has the same issue. By the way i have tried with other carriers as well. It is a device/ software issue they cant dind
