iPhone 8/ 8 plus home button cracked

I have been using my iPhone 8 for a little over 6 weeks. Last night I plugged in my phone to charge and walked away for about an hour. When I came back the phone had turned off and I observed a hairline crack running across the home button. The phone was not dropped or even touched during this time. It honestly just spontaneously cracked. I know that the iPhone 7 had a similar issue but I was not able to find anyone that had experiences a similar issue with the iPhone 8.

I called Apple care and they advised that it would be anywhere from 99-600 dollars to have the home button replaced. Has anyone had a similar issue with their iPhone 8 or 8 plus? Thank you.

Same thing happened to my brand new iphone 8. I bought it 7 days ago and did not hit it anywhere. It was on my car seat and I realized the apple logo on my phone and a crack on the home button. I live in a town 3 hours away from the nearest apple store. I called them and they did not believe me as I expected. They told, "PEOPLE CAN WRITE ANYTHING ON INTERNET" which I believe it absolutely rude and nonsense reply. After 30 min explaining the fact that excessive amount of pressure can not cause crack, "solid mechanics 101", he said that I have to send mt phone for them and they will check it. They are going to send a box for my claim which takes 15 days for them to receive my phone and assess it which is an absolute hassle for over 20 next days. I am not sure what they will say.User uploaded file

Guys!!! I have some really good news. So I’ve been following this thread since it happened to me April 20. Since then, I’ve gone to Apple twice, been turned away blaming me for physical damage, shed a few years and contemplated throwing this phone at a brick wall a few times lmao. But yesterday, I gave it one last shot before I attempted to have to pay a bulls**t amount of $250 to replace the screen on my 8 plus (3 months old at that). I decided to chat with an Apple advisor. I explained the whole situation, sent this thread, sent her pics of the home button and everything. Now her exact words after chatting and asking me questions like “was the phone warm when you found it in that condition” ect, she said after doing some digging apparently this issue is “apparent and recognized”. So yes this issue is recognized by Apple so guys do not give up. Be persistent. Chat with an advisor and explain the situation, she set me up with a repair, I now have a case created with all of her evidence toward my case. I’m going into Apple tomorrow to get this fixed, for FREE, once and for all! She said if they give me trouble to refer to my case number and ask for a manager. I will let you guys know what happens tomorrow!!! Keep being persistent and do not pay these people to fix this phone when it’s their fault. Good luck guys

Wow this amazes me! I went to the Apple store and was told it would be $170 fix, I refused. Then the manger came over and said she’d give me a discount so the total would be $100... I refuse to pay another cent for a defective device!! This iPhone 8Plus is already well over $800, and they want me to pay to fix a problem I didn’t cause? I can’t believe how all the pics show almost the same exact cracking!User uploaded file

So same thing happened to my phone today around 530pm. I had my phone in my hand as I was walking to the yoga studio. Then I felt my

thumb got hot and I looked at my phone and it was all of

a sudden on the Apple screen frozen and the home button is cracked !! I was so confused as I did not drop my phone. I use Spotify and iTunes for my class and I couldn’t bc my phone is on freeze mode. Luckily another teacher was able to let me use her phone so I can teach my class. This very upsetting and stressful. I don’t have money to spend on repair. I’ve only had this phone for a month and a half . I will be taking my phone to Apple store tomorrow and I hope that they fix it!User uploaded file

’m not happy. Brought a new iPhone which was sent directly from Apple. Was using it fine for like a couple of weeks when I charged it came back and the home screen button was cracked and I hadn’t touched it. This enabled the touch screen to work so I wasn’t able to get on any of my apps. I then did some digging onto apple Communities here and realised that a lot of people were experiencing the same problem. I went onto twitter to express my disappointment and Apple support asked me to DM (Direct message) them I did that and after speaking to them they said it was best to go in store. Today I went to the Istore and i spoke to a manager and he said he’d need permision from Apple support to go ahead with a free repair and would do it if he could. He said he has seen this issue before and it was best to contact support again. After waiting ages for Apple support to finally reply they told me I needed to go in store again. I find it absolute rediculous that I am being passed from one to another. Apple are just ignoring the problem completely. All they care about is making a profit and not about delivering good customer service. I am not happy with my treatment And I’m comsidering not using Apple again. Apple is clearly responsibe for this issue why ignore me?

You won't necessarily receive a "new phone" as warranty replacements don't work that way. You might, or you might receive a refurbished phone, those are the terms of the warranty.

Regardless, once again, if you are experiencing this issue, be sure to take it in to your local Apple Store/servicer for analysis.

Apple will investigate the issue if they start to see a "pattern."

Also be sure to report your issue to Apple here:

Apple certainly tracks issues, and if enough people with AppleCare+ are seeing this they will certainly note a spike in repairs.

(I only state AppleCare+ as people without may choose other venues to pursue a repair.)

I agree with Chris; you were lucky they agreed to pay for the repair. My daughter's phone was barely two months old. She isn't rough on gear (hers was an upgrade from a 5c that was still working fine) but they basically insisted we were lying about the fact that the phone did this all by itself....

PLEASE go to Product Feedback - Apple

and outline what happened to you there. We all need to do that...

And thanks for posting!

Suspected Design or Mfg Defect on iphone 8 Plus

I recommend an investigation for the iphone 8 Plus home button cracking issue. As of today, it may still be early in it's life, but many consumers like me are having their home buttons mysteriously cracking and malfunctioning without abuse, dropping, or other unusual activities.

Apple Stores have not acknowledged this as a defect for warranty claims yet, but I recommend a prudent investigation.

My 3 month device was just repaired for $169+tax, for what I consider should have been a warranty, defective item.

What makes this area too weak to last a few months of vibration and interaction?

Thank you for getting this to the right people to read forums, read repair logs, investigate and correct the issue, and refund consumers who had to pay.
